If you grew up in the south, just the look of this plant brings back memories as rich as it's flavor. The okra is a fusion of cultures, hailing originally from the banks of the Nile. It does not want you to mess with it. You nearly have to put on a suit of armor just to harvest the prickly pods. I remember sweating my a$$ off going out to pick okra covered from head to toe in long sleeves during the scorching heat of a Mississippi summer, but it's worth it - especially when it's pickled!
