Angee Montgomery

I am a painter who creates ornate and natural works to pour love and beauty through my experiences.
MessageThe creative process is oh so good for your soul! It’s been a transformative and healing aspect of my life, even when I’m crawling from the depths of a painful experience. I’m not interested in painting a perfect scene or what most consider beautiful. Painting has my back - it’s the friend I count on to absorb how deeply I experience the world, and my link to kindred spirits. I play, unload, and envision a more beautiful future on my easel.
As the eternal optimist, I wholeheartedly believe that I can bring out the beauty in most anything, and even if it seems harsh now - there is a purpose. Creating “beautiful” artwork is the container I use for my experiences, the good and the bad.
My passion for drawing led to private oil painting instruction in my early teens, foundational instruction from Memphis College of Art, and a BFA from the University of Memphis in 2014. I've had many creative professions dotting my path as a young artist such as Graphic Designer, Creative Educator, and Community Arts Director. For full CV, visit www.angeemontgomery.com
Statement
The works I create are stories and feelings spoken through paint - that I find it difficult even now to put to words. They can be symbolic in many ways and are ever evolving as I grow as a person. They are often results of introspective wanderings. Like a person wandering down a beach, I pick up a shell from here, and a rock from there and display collections of my subconscious with layers of paint. Usually, I can’t help but dive into themes such as invisibility, connection, vulnerability and instinct paired with a strong dose of childlike imagination.
Every painting belongs to some string of investigation. It seems like similar to my thought process and real life internal compass, I can become easily lost unless I’ve traveled the road 100 times. Sometimes even switching paths or overlapping one with another. However, there are two main roads that every trail leads back to - one of real life play and one of deep rooted histories bubbling to the surface.
