Sometimes, a place leaves its mark on us. We leave a mark on it. Our identity, its sense of place. That cartographic memory—traced in streets, landmarks, and personal moments—turns a map into more than a record of locations. It holds stories, layers of connection, and the invisible threads that tie us to a landscape.
This mural, created for a home in Piedmont, CA, traces those connections, layering color, movement, and meaning into the familiar contours of the Bay Area. Interior Design Studio HANOMOCO lead an impressive renovation with their unique style. Intagram: @hanomocodesign
I designed the map entirely from the ground up in Photoshop, carefully shaping each detail before printing it onto MDF panels. But the real transformation happened in the studio—where I painted over the printed maps, letting new pathways emerge. Colors shifted, landmarks surfaced, and the piece evolved into something more than just a map. It became a collaboration—an exchange of memories, a weaving of personal histories into a shared visual language.
