Ana de Cova
My research develops around mental landscapes, experimenting with our capacity of leaving marks and erasing them
MessageAna de Cova is a Spaniard abstract painter whose works evoke the perception of movement while suggesting calm. Her creations are like Zen gardens, places for contemplation and reflection. Intimate landscapes where the soul settles. These mental landscapes exist in the point of tension between the botanical and the abstract.
The notion of space and lightness are at the heart of her work. Additionally, the exploration of materiality reveals itself through the handling of paint and the use of the support. Minimal brushstrokes form compositions that lie behind layers of painting and washes, almost like watercolour, and the occasional use of silver leaf. With loose gesture, the aerial works oscillate between the moment experienced and the un-experienced, the almost nothing, to suggest an ethereal atmosphere.
Some paintings look unfinished, such as when she leaves some parts of the support untouched and empty, as if the painter would walk in to put the final brushstrokes any minute. Together with the more lyrical paintings, they pose questions about the ephemeral quality of things that are dissapearing and how they can fade away in a moment.
From early childhood, Ana was interested in painting, exploring its different facets and techniques while giving free rein to personal experimentation. She mainly works with acrylic paint on canvas, as well as raw cotton, wood and paper.
