my Penner was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1986. Although artistically inclined as a child and encouraged to pursue art by her high school art teacher, she instead felt pressure to follow the well trodden path, and studied accounting at the Asper School of Business.
After graduating university, she worked for an accounting firm, but soon finding the work to be unfulfilling, she took time off and travelled the world, visiting such places as Peru, Guatemala, Thailand, Cambodia and Morocco. During these travels, most of her time was spent reading, journaling, sketching and reflecting on life and how best to spend it. After this period of reflection, and as she had always felt a calling to the arts, she knew this was the direction to take.
In mid 2017, she secured her first art studio space in a beautiful heritage building at 618 Arlington in Winnipeg. Here, she made up for lost time by spending every free evening and weekend painting. In the search for her style, she experimented with different mediums and styles, producing around 50 pieces within a one year period, including geometrics, abstracts and figurative pieces, and experimenting with acrylic, oil, charcoal and pastels. This year was incredibly productive and set her on her current path.
In 2019, she moved to Ottawa, to support her entrepreneurial husband. Here she set up a home studio, allowing her to paint in every free moment possible.
Amy has always been inspired by the great masters of color: David Hockney, Henri Matisse, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner among others. Her paintings are created with bright bold colours, to bring joy to the viewer and to bring colour into people’s lives. She currently focuses on painting acrylic on canvas.
Her work was included in the 2019 show “Mosaic” at the Trinity Art Gallery, and won the Juror’s choice award.
