Amy Helmick
Chattanooga, TN
Amy Helmick's work can be described as dark, moody with occasional obscure humor. She often uses metaphor as a tool to express ideas, emotions and thoughts .
MessageAmy has lived all her life in the Southeastern United States in Georgia and Tennessee. The only child of a working class family, Amy is interested in seeing beauty and value that can be found in people and things often overlooked. Her work tends toward the moody and melancholic, though in it she seeks to discover and accentuate the worth of the commonplace; to encourage appreciation of what is right here around us. Often using symbol and emblem in her work, Amy aspires to give visual expression to the ineffable.
Statement
From an early age I have been fascinated by the camera and photographs. After taking a formal college photography course in my 30's, I became even more enamored by the medium. Having explored many genres of photography and enjoying most of them, I'm finding my true love resides in fine art work and in portraiture. I find these areas in particular have the ability to express and show ideas, emotions and imaginings as well as to simply capture beauty. I can't imagine I'll ever tire of the study of this art form.
When I'm not thinking about, studying or practicing photography per se, I can be found spending time with my husband, "reading" (via audiobook) or watching a good movie. Combine all of that with the occasional walk with friends or cooking and I'm a happy girl.
