Exploring bags and boxes as tools for containment, in and of themselves, The Colour of our Hearts is the Colour of our City, 2015-2019 is people-focused, and affectionately themed so. This one-piece exhibition is participatory (with audiences) and performative (by the audience and the artist).
Using individual bags as objects that aid us to think about the human being as entities that have the capacity to hold and to contain, may we bear in mind that we have the responsibility to be better, and to make better, the spaces where we stand.
CONCEPT:
1. The colour of my heart as an individual can be derived from the colour of the locality where I inhabit. Who am I as a person and how am I making my city, community, and immediate spaces better or worse because of my presence in it?
This installation tries to activate a city setting, with pouches standing as people living in clusters amongst streets, within closed and open walls
2. It is a relational piece that draws the audience into the work to be part of the piece as it grows with the charge of the audience.
3. With this line of work, I intend to encourage audiences to enjoy art by being part of it, having a stake in the piece, and holding it in their memories through participation; enlightening as well, audiences that may ordinarily never engage with art.
It’s a piece that people write into and have conversations about. The conversation and the writing into… is key
We are sealed bags full of secrets, full of sourness, joy, hope, gratitude, envy, love, kindness, compassion, empathy, jealousy, selfishness, pride, depravity, cheer; which of these possible contents is abundant in me, and hence, in my city because of me? In general, do I enjoy the people in my city? Why so? Why not?
What kind of ingredients would I enjoy from co-dwellers in my city? How shall we multiply these ingredients to have an enjoyable city?
