Oil painter from Tennessee creating layered works that explore light, memory, and the quiet weight of beauty.
MessageI was born and raised in the South. While studying at the University of Tennessee, my husband’s grandfather invited me to an art class that changed the trajectory of my life. I am both hearing and vision impaired, and painting has really given me a practice that helps me to see form and light and color and a different way to experience the world around me. My art career grew from a love of beauty and the belief that a painting is a language without words. I am always learning—studying with other artists, examining the work of the old masters, and refining my technique.
I work in oil in a modern cloisonnist language—bold outlines and layered color. My work is about memory and place, often holding the weight of seasons and the tenderness of change. I paint my story using fruit and like to use fruit as an allegorical framework to human life. I paint en plein air and in the studio, from the Smokies to travels abroad, listening to each place as I work. Current collections include What the Light Held and After | Giant Moth. I truly hope my paintings add a beautiful layer to the story you are telling in your home.
Statement
Art and beauty have inherent value. I believe art can hold a memory and represent a current experience, and that how I experience art helps me understand my own culture and identity. My work often holds story and place at the same time—the weight of seasons and the tenderness of change. I want the work to slow you down—an invitation to pay attention, to receive what’s already there, and to notice what you might have overlooked. For me, creating art is one of the bravest things I do. — Amanda
