Statement
As an investigation-focused multidisciplinary artist, my practice is creating artwork that invites viewers to notice, observe, and reflect upon the environments I encounter. Through careful documentation of the landscapes around me, including photographs, frottage, foraging, sketching, and cyanotypes, I capture the unique qualities of these spaces and translate them into multi-layered compositions.
My artwork encompasses a wide range of subjects, from the natural world to urban environments, all united by a common thread of close observation and a curiosity to uncover the unique qualities of each space. The process begins with a fascination for the intricate details, striking patterns, and subtle nuances I discover in these environments, which I meticulously document through various means, including photography, sketching, and material collection. These observations and documentation serve as reference points for my larger compositions and artistic expressions in their own right.
The collected materials, such as foraged plant matter and handmade papers crafted from recycled artwork and studio scraps, become integral components of my multi-layered works, blurring the line between the initial inspiration and the final piece. By elevating the status of these documentations, I emphasize the importance of the process itself, recognizing that observing, collecting, and recording is as much a part of my artistic practice as the creation of the final compositions.
Through my work, I aim to capture the essence of a moment, whether it's the fleeting beauty of a landscape or the ephemeral quality of light dancing across a surface. By translating the spontaneity of my initial sketches, photographs, and collected materials into mixed-media compositions, I seek to create lasting memories that encapsulate the spirit of each environment I encounter.
The documentation process allows me to preserve these moments in time, distilling the essence of a place into a tangible form. As I work with these materials in my studio, layering and manipulating them into new compositions, I infuse each piece with a sense of personal connection. The resulting artworks become a testament to the power of observation and the ability of art to evoke a deep sense of place and memory.
Ultimately, my goal is to create artwork that resonates with viewers profoundly, inviting them to reflect on their own experiences and memories of the environments surrounding them. By fostering a dialogue between the artwork and the audience, I aim to inspire a greater appreciation for the beauty and significance of our world, encouraging viewers to slow down, observe, and find meaning in the everyday moments that shape our lives.
