My artistic practices haven’t necessarily changed with COVID-19. I’m a full time artist so my schedule hasn’t changed. It’s more so how I approach my work that has changed. Last year I felt as though I made huge breakthroughs and was starting to get noticed. What changed were my plans, a shift in how I could keep my momentum moving forward now that we’re not as accessible to the public as we once were.
“I have long had a natural inclination toward organic shapes and they took on a common shape that I thought of as a cocoon in my college years. As I have pushed myself to explore my artistic abilities since then, I have tried different shapes and marks and the “cocoons” faded away or morphed into something else. It wasn’t until I was just needing to physically paint, without a plan in mind, that the cocoon reappeared. I had mentally decided I was in a ‘nesting’ phase of the Covid-19 shutdown and was already just doing projects around the house that needed to be done anyway to make my home more comforting. In a way, this painting is just that, making things more comfortable, creating a cocoon to just feel safe. This one isn’t as solid, more transparent in ways because we are still in this time where so much is unknown.”
