Alexander Botha
Montagu, Western Cape
ALEXander's chief question is "what would happen if?" He challenges the traditional through his off-beat rendering and unconventional combinations of materials.
MessageAlexander Botha currently resides in Montagu, a small town on the edge of the Klein Karoo, South Africa.
His fascination with the process of artmaking started when, at the age of eight, during his first art class, he was introduced to the magic of mixing colours. Ignoring the given assignment, he mixed 11 shades of green instead.
He attended Pro-Arte High School for Art, Ballet, Drama and Music, where he earned honour colours for culture by winning a Santam School Leavers Bursary, and by designing, organising and executing The Painting Game. The latter took place at the opening of the New Signatures Exhibition, where 16 diverse professional artists worked together, in groups of four, on a single canvas. No artists were hurt in the production of the artwork.
He went on to work as a museum artist at the IZIKO Natural History Museum in Pretoria, during which he collaborated in an international project, Dynamation, which coincided with the opening of the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. At the museum, he built dioramas, silkscreened portable displays, created exhibition displays, and produced technical line drawings from specimens for various departments. He also worked as a freelance illustrator for training manuals and other materials.
Upon moving to Montagu in 2009, he was one of the founding members of the Montagu Arts Association and has been an active member and participant in group exhibitions throughout.
During his 20-plus years of working with at-risk children and youth as well as with adults with psychiatric disabilities, he has used art as a teaching, therapeutic and income-generation tool. He has participated in holiday programmes for youth in Montagu under the auspices of the Montagu/Ashton Tourism bureau. He will continue in 2026 by hosting regular art sessions with children from one of the farm schools in Montagu.
In 2023 and again in 2025, he held solo exhibitions in Cape Town that generated funds for CABSA, an NGO that empowers local communities to manage and advocate for persons affected and infected with HIV/AIDS, especially in rural communities.
In 2025, he participated in a group exhibition at an international IAM symposium, as well as a curated miniatures exhibition hosted by the Bellville Art Association. During the same year, he held a solo exhibition at the Montagu Country Hotel.
In 2026, Alexander will strengthen and expand his online footprint and streamline the sales processes associated with it.
