Artist Statement: These paintings are explorations of public space and urban concerns: how diverse individuals negotiate public space; how cultural forces play out and how public places can simultaneously be sites of personal memory and meaning. By using layers, opacity and transparency, I aim to suggest the diverse internal experiences that can exist in public spaces. Oakland scenes appear in many works. For example, “Untitled #6 (Silk Jacket)” shows a street in Chinatown, with the EBMUD building in the background. “The Good Life #2” mixes street scenes from Clay Street and International Boulevard.
