Strip-Pieced Squared Faces #1
- Quilted hand-dyed fabric, fabric crayon, and pen. Created with students in the Artist in the Schools Program at Peralta Elementary School in Oakland.
- 47 x 44 in
- Ellen Oppenheimer
Artist Statement: After years of students drawing themselves on rectangular pieces of paper and fabric students were given squares of fabric and asked to turn it 45 degrees and then draw their self portraits inside the ‘diamond’ shape. In quilting this is called using a square on point. Quite a few students could not make the transition leaving me with several squares that did not fit into the quilt that we had planned. I used scraps that I had saved from other quilts to piece this quilt together.
