Artist Statement: This piece was created during a two-year period, 1999-2000, when I was looking for a house to buy. It is one of six pieces utilizing the house shape and one of the two similar but different looking compositions. It reminds me of the Berkeley Hills.
From as early as I can remember, I have thought of myself as an artist. I have been driven to create my own vision of reality based on symbols derived from conscious dreams and nightmares. As an artist, I am interested in communicating more than just moods or emotions, preferring instead to tell a visual story and allow viewers to draw on their own experiences in interpreting the symbols and their meanings for themselves. IT is for this reason that I work with recognizable imagery, as it allows me to use a visual vocabulary which is both personal and universal.
I began printing in college and continued professionally for ten years until moving to California in 1991. It took some time to find a place to print after the move, and during the interim, I discovered working with fabric both two- and three-dimensionally, making quilts and soft sculptures. For a long time, I simply transformed my imagery to the new medium of cloth. I struggled with the separation between my print work and cloth work. In the last four years, I have been concentrating on successfully combining the two.
I enjoy working in series. It allows a full range of exploration of a subject. My subjects are most often feminine (or feminist) and domestic, especially since I had my daughter, Olivia Davis, now three. Motherhood has a huge potential for visual exploration, and it makes me want to examine the theme of my mother and my childhood as well. The piece in this show is one of the first pieces of an exploration about my new career as mother and how it has changed my view of myself.
