Artist's Statement: The mural is one of the few mediums controlled by the common people, the primary reason it has a long history of political content. My belief is that we must paint public art that is relevant to what the people think and feel, yet that is conscious of, and free from, the brainwashing messages prevalent in mass media. With young graffiti artists, it is important to guide them to become voices for their community instead of feeling disconnected from it. I also believe it is critical to build community. For this reason, I invite many people to participate in creating my murals; for me, the most amazing point of this project is that some parts of the murals were painted by youth at the old Juvenile Hall. In creating public art, my intention is to shift the social consciousness toward building a sustainable people’s movement, with awareness and respect for all people.
