Artist Statement: These photographs represent the everyday comings and goings, the patterns and textures of various Bay Area communities. As a photographer, I wanted to capture the beauty and tenderness of the daily lives of people in our communities – from Chinatown to the East Bay to the disabled community. I saw long-time friendships and relationships, feelings of intimacy, loyalty and a sense of belonging. Fragments of life are contained in a moment.
Growing up in inner city Boston exposed me to many different cultural and ethnic groups. When I photograph, I am reminded of the similarities that bind us together as family and community, and I often find the richness of this diversity reflected in my photographs. I am drawn to the day-to-day, the simple, the overlooked, the unnoticed.
While my work chronicles the everyday moments of different communities, family and community are themes which cut across cultures. These images reflect special moments of contemplation, joy, wonder and play. These small stories make up the big picture defining a diverse Bay Area.
