Beacon of Light is a glass mosaic tile mural designed by Alameda County artist David Burke. The artwork offers reminders of the past, inspiration for the present, and hope for the future while honoring the work of the men and women of Station 23. The mural celebrates the Alameda County Fire Department’s history and long-standing service to the community by featuring an image of the former Station 23. The former station’s signal light, at the intersection of Meekland Avenue and Grove Way, is also included symbolizing the protective light shining over the community. Lush greenery and cherry blossoms surround historic images of the neighborhood and the Meek Estate symbolizing the fertility of the land and representing life, growth, and hope. Burke’s design was selected through an open, competitive process by a committee comprised of community members, Fire Department representatives, and a local artist.
