- Water jet cut granite and marble mosaic inset on 35 seatblocks and 2 gateway markers (Sierra White Granite, Pietra Cardoza, and Jaipur Dune Satin)
Artist: Pippa Murray Mosaics x
The artwork celebrates Castro Valley's natural environment and community and is part of the larger Castro Valley Boulevard Streetscape Improvement Project. The artwork was created by artist Miriam Klein Stahl in collaboration with Pippa Murray Mosaics. The artwork is on 35 seat blocks and 2 gateway markers. Silhouettes of the hills found around Castro Valley are made in cut stone and face both the street and the sidewalks. Additionally, the sides of several the seat blocks facing the sidewalks feature images of local landmarks and community activities made in marble mosaic. Images representing native plants are made in marble mosaic on the tops of all the seat blocks. All imagery has a Sierra White granite background. The artwork was selected through an open, competitive process by an artist selection committee consisting of 7 Castro Valley residents plus local artists and County staff. The selection panel chose Stahl’s proposal due to its uniqueness, hand-crafted style, and its vibrant reflection of the special characteristics of Castro Valley.
