This terrazzo floor design by Donna Billick literally and metaphorically reflects the history of Alameda County and the lives of its citizens. It connects us with the past and the historical role of the Alameda County Recorder's Office. Records of birth, death, marriage and property, as well as the cattle brands of haciendas in the region, began as handwritten documents kept by missions, such as Mission San Jose (founded 1809) in Fremont. Inlaid brass letters in the style of quill pen lettering are found throughout the floor.
The hand-bent brass shapes of the ocean, port, rolling hills and valleys, embedded into twelve colors of terrazzo, reflect the varied landscapes and seascapes of Alameda County.
The artist's concept echoes the function of this landmark building with metaphors for the milestones of life. The ribboned trail leads into the main chamber to the clerks' windows where births, deaths and marriages are recorded. Seasons of life are represented in images of spring, summer, fall and winter. Blossoms and new beginnings signal birth and marriage. Falling leaves and acorns in a white, gold and black palette suggest aging and death. Symbols of transformative events -- the gold rush, the coming of the railroad, the industrial revolution -- are also featured.
