What makes people set aside short-term, personal interest, and focus instead on long-term, collective interest? I have turned to writing projects to help me answer this question. The stewardship of our natural parks is an example of how people set aside the short term and look to the long term, how they choose the collective over the individual. The communities of people whose labor and lives protect our wildlands are crucial to planetary survival.
