Getaway is a 10-channel video installation that explores the layered meanings of the word “getaway”—as escape, disappearance, retreat, and transformation. The project is rooted in the Everglades, using the landscape as both a cinematic backdrop and a character in its own right. It draws from a tragic event that took place in the region in the mid-1990s to reflect on how this land has been misinterpreted and mythologized.
A 30-minute audio composition accompanies the installation, featuring a commissioned cover of Walter Hyatt’s song “Getaway” by U.K.-based musician Francis Lung, along with a slowed-down reinterpretation of Mica Levi’s “Love” (from the film Under the Skin), synchronized with the project's slow-motion visuals. The work moves through themes of solitude, mortality, and the desire to vanish from society—positioning the human figure as small and fleeting within the vast terrain of the universe.
This still image was created as part of the project during my residency at AIRIE and reflects the installation’s meditative and cinematic approach to the Everglades as a site of both history and projection.
