The Cantonese song referred to in the words on the painting ("there are no such big toad jumping along the street") refers to the idiom that nothing is ever for free, even goodwill. In this work, Ghost Mountain Field looks to a slightly more contemporary global cultural context, referencing Mystique from the comic franchise X-Men, who is able to change her outward appearance . Its eastern element hails from the Chinese short story "Painted Skin" (畫皮), about a Chinese scholar who becomes infatuated with a demon who paints the beautiful skin she she disguises in. As such, this work is one that refers to the complex duplicity of this world, that often may be sinister.
