Plate, 7.5 inches diameter. Brown transfer with polychrome clobbering. Printed maker's mark for E. & C. Challinor. This pattern features two large cartouches: a swan and chicks in the round cartouche, and a bird in flight in the square one slightly behind it. There is a large bunch of iris behind both cartouches. Off to the left is a shorebird near a pond. A foliage spray to the left of the plate has several butterflies flying above it.

E. & C. Challinor were earthenware and ironstone manufacturers at the Fenton Potteries in Fenton, Staffordshire, England. The partners were Edward and Charles Challinor. Charles had many other business interests and also owned a nearby ‘Stilt & Spur Works’ and the Glebe Colliery. Concurrently, there was the partnership of Challinor & Mayer at the same factory. From 1892, Charles continued the business as C. Challinor & Co.
