Plate, 6 inches diameter. Brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for Grimwade Bros. Registration number dates the registration of this pattern to 1892. "Winton" is primarily a border pattern featuring alternating bands. A four equidistant points around the plate, vertical rectangular bands feature elaborate flower urns with trailing flowers. In between these are four horizontal rectangular bands featuring blowsy flowers and foliage. Beneath both these bands are small stylized flowers that circle around the center of the well. A thin border of stylized flowers and half-flowers with a ling of gilding circles the rim of the plate.
Grimwade Brothers was founded by Leonard Lumsden Grimwade. Leonard had shown a natural talent for modelling pottery and it was in this field that his infant business began, in 1885. He was soon joined in the business by his older brother, Sidney Richard, another potter. They established their Winton Pottery (Stoke) in about 1886. A wide range of useful and decorative earthenware was produced. By 1890 new showrooms had been purchased in Stoke-on-Trent and London and the style became Grimwades Ltd.
