Compote, 9.5 x 9.5 x 4.5 inches. Brown transfer with polychrome clobbering. Printed maker's mark for Ford & Riley. This sheet pattern consists of a background of ivy vines and geranium leaves. Rectangular cartouches with the corners cut off are laid over this background sheet. Every cartouche features one of two repeating images. One image consists of two figures in a small boat on a lake with shoreline in the foreground and background. The other consists of an empty boat on a lake next to the shoreline with the opposite shoreline and a distant mountain in the background. The pattern name "Windermere" could be a reference to a very large lake near the small town of Windermere in the south Lake District of Cumbria, England. This pattern was also produced by Thomas Furnival & Sons.

Whittingham, Ford & Co. began at the High Street Potteries of Burslem, Staffordshire, England, and operated from 1868 to 1873. In 1876, the company moved to its eventual permanent home at Newcastle Street, Burslem, operating under the name Whittingham, Ford & Riley. From 1882 to 1893, the growing company took the name Ford & Riley, then Ford & Sons from 1893 to 1908, with the Ltd. designation added in 1908, and continuing until 1938.
