Sugar bowl, unknown dimensions. Printed maker's mark for Whittaker & Co. The Rd. No. dates the registration of this pattern to 1889, although the inclusion of "England" indicates this particular piece was produced after 1891. The same delicate pattern of three vertical stalks of wildflowers and foliage is featured on both sides. The sides are printed with two stalks of foliage and the handles feature a lobed leaf below a series of narrow arches. The lid features a small clump of delicate flowers on each side and the lid is printed with smaller versions of the narrow arches found on the handles.
Whittaker & Co. was a brief series of partnerships of earthenware manufacturers, operating the Hallfield Pottery, built in 1882) in Hanley, Staffordshire. The original partners were Lewis Whittaker, James Edge, Samuel Heath, John Henry Weatherby, and Robert Rowley. Whittaker, Edge & Co.: 1882-1886. Whittaker & Co.: 1886-1892.
