Pitcher (11.5 inches tall) and basin (15.25 inches diameter). Blue transfer. Printed maker's mark for James Gildea. The Rd. No. indicates a pattern registration date of 1885. The "Palm" pattern features geese flying amongst palm fronds. The pitcher, which features an elephant-head handle, depicts four flying geese and palm fronds. A molded band with a braid wraps around the top third of the pitcher. The inside of the basin features a similar design as the pitcher, with the addition of some papyrus plants. The outside of the basin features additional geese and palm fronds and possesses a molded braid band around the rim and molded half diamonds alternating around the rim and base.
In 1878 James Gildea joined the partnership of Bates and Walker at the Dale Hall Works, Burslem, Staffordshire. In 1881 Bates left the partnership and Gildea & Walker continued together. In 1885 Gildea continued the business alone. Around 1887 the business was carried on as Keeling & Co.
