Vase, 5.5 inches tall. Blue transfer. Printed maker's mark for the New Wharf Pottery Co. The Rd. No. indicates a pattern registration date of 1885. The same image is repeated on two sides of the vase. A multi-panel folding screen or fence sits in the foreground. The outside panels are decorated with geometric motifs and the central panel with a floral spray. Behind the screen a large, squat footed vase with handles sits. It is decorated with a fish-scale pattern and a central image of a man and woman opposite each other with an unidentified object between. The vase is filled with large blooms and branches with fruit. The border consists of repeated squares filled with octagons with a single stylized flower in the center.

In 1877 Thomas Wood, along with his brother William, purchased for £5,075 a site in Navigation Road, which they called New Wharf Pottery, and which they had probably been tenants of since 1875. The name New Wharf was derived from the Wharf that was built on the nearby Burslem Branch of the Trent & Mersey canal at that time. In 1894 the works were absorbed into the larger Wood & Son company.
