Plate, 9 inches diameter. Black transfer. Unknown maker. This Japonesque pattern features several related motifs. The central motif consists of a group of three Japanese archers on horseback looking upwards towards a bird falling from the sky, pierced by an arrow. Both the group and the bird are framed by slender branches with leaves and unusual framing devices decorated with geometric patterns. There are three additional motifs placed evenly around the rim. One consists of a cartouche with a falcon on a stand laid over another cartouche decorated with a stylized floral motif. Both cartouches are laid over stems of flowers. Another motif consists of a bird which seems to be escaping from a cage which is laid over slender stems of foliage. The largest motif consists of an unusual stylized-butterfly cartouche. The bottom "wings" contain a bird's head and wing and the "body" features a landscape with a man on horseback galloping towards a flying bird.
