Plate, 7.75 inches diameter. Black transfer with gilding. Printed maker's mark for Thomas Wood & Co. This pattern is composed of three groupings of flowers and cartouches. The largest grouping is composed of a thorny branch of hawthorn blossoms laid under two overlapping cartouches. The circular cartouche has a woodland scene of a stone bridge over a stream and the diamond cartouche has an ocean scene with a clipper ship. The second smaller grouping consists of another blooming hawthorn branch with two cartouches. The cartouches are almost identical to the other two, with scenes of a bridge over water and a sailing ship on the ocean. The third grouping or element, is a blooming hawthorn branch by itself.

Thomas Wood & Co. was an earthenware manufacturer at the Wedgwood Pottery and then (probably from 1886) at the Queen Street Potteries, Burslem, Staffordshire, England. The operational dates for Thomas Wood & Co were 1885 to 1896, and Thomas Wood & Sons as 1896 to 1897. In 1897 the business became Wood & Barker Ltd.
