Serving plate, 9 inches handle-to-handle (22.9cm). Printed maker's mark for W. H. Grindley & Co. The Rd. number indicates this pattern was registered in 1886. This highly-stylized pattern features a lumpy shape at the base decorated with geometric and floral patterns, maybe meant to represent a rock. From this rock, elaborate stylized flowers and leaves on curling stems grow. The molded handles feature a single flowerhead with a vine of leaves trailing from either side.
W. H. Grindley & Co. was founded at the Newfield Pottery in 1880 by William Harry Grindley (principal partner) and Mr. Turner (the '& Co.') They produced Earthenware and Ironstone China - particularly for the Canadian, United States, South American and Australian markets. In 1891 the company moved to the Woodfield Pottery, Woodland Street, Tunstall.
