Toothbrush holder, 5.5 x 2.25 inches. Black transfer. The registry diamond indicates a date of 19 September 1882, which is the date that W. H. Grindley registered the "Shakespeare" pattern. One side of the toothbrush holder features a cartouche with an image of Guy's Tower, Warwick Castle, superimposed over a flowering stem. The opposite side of the toothbrush holder features a sprig with leaves and ovoid fruit. The base features a different small motif on opposite sides: a sprig of bluebells and a sprig of flower buds or small fruit. The border on the inside rim consists of a chain of oak leaves.

W. H. Grindley & Co. was founded at the Newfield Pottery in 1880 by William Harry Grindley (principal partner) and Mr. Turner (the '& Co.') They produced earthenware and ironstone china - particularly for the Canadian, United States, South American, and Australian markets. In 1891 the company moved to the Woodfield Pottery, Woodland Street, Tunstall.
