Plate, 9.5 inches diameter. Brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for Whittaker & Co. This pattern features a circular cartouche in the center with a large medieval castle complete with moat and drawbridge. Two small figures in a rowboat approach the drawbridge on the water. The cartouche is framed by thorny branches, which are in turn framed by apple blossom branches. The border consists of a simple chain of "W" figures tipped with small circles.
A brief series of partnerships of earthenware manufacturers, operating the Hallfield Pottery, built in 1882) in Hanley, Staffordshire.
