Plate, 9.25 inches diameter. Black transfer with gilding. Printed maker's mark for Grimwade Bros. The registration number "108552" dates the pattern registration to 1888. The pattern includes a central cartouche of a group of waterfowl near a pond with a cottage, basket-weave fence, and woods beyond. Beneath the cartouche is a wooden trellis with wild roses climbing on, above, and below it. Framing the trellis are decorative roundels in a Renaissance style. Winkle & Wood of the Colonial Pottery in Hanley, produced the same Adelaide pattern, also with Rd. No. 108552. This probably means that the Rd. No. is attached to the pattern name.

Grimwade Brothers was founded by Leonard Lumsden Grimwade. Leonard had shown a natural talent for modelling pottery and it was in this field that his infant business began, in 1885. He was soon joined in the business by his older brother, Sidney Richard, another potter. They established their Winton Pottery (Stoke) in about 1886. A wide range of useful and decorative earthenware was produced. By 1890 new showrooms had been purchased in Stoke-on-Trent and London and the style became Grimwades Ltd.
