Statement
Art making is many things to me.
It creates stories interpreted in a multitude of ways through its use of materials, colour, mood and subject.
It challenges perceptions – can grass be blue and water red? It can mix materials, perspectives and styles.
It is a place beyond words where actions bypass the mind and take you to fresh fields. Its like a unique burst of nature, a somewhat addictive subconscious connection.
I continually look at new ways of art making – not willing to be defined and limited by one style. For me familiarity halts the questioning space, which stops growth and awareness of present reality.
I find inspiration from what contemporary painters abroad are doing. I am interested in looking at the New Zealand landscape in new ways and connecting it to big picture issues that affect all of us including the media, spirituality and the human condition.
Born in Nelson, I returned here to live from Auckland / Waiheke in 2002. I am a multi media artist working in the areas of painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.
Having gained a Bachelor of Fine Arts (hons) in painting at ILAM in 2009, I have continued to experiment in new media and have participated in over 30 exhibitions nationally and internationally.
In the last 2 years I have been a finalist in the Parkin Drawing Awards and the Waiheke Island Walker and Hall Awards. I was accepted into the Wallace Art Awards in 2013 and have a sculptural piece in the Wallace Art Collection.
I have been a finalist in the Trust Waikato National Contemporary Art Award, the Waikato National Art Awards and the Cranleigh Barton Awards at Canterbury Museum.
I have collaborated on various projects being one of the artists and the project manager for the Ruby Coast Gateway sculptures. I have also collaborated with Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, local schools and Greenpeace on the ‘Slick’ project promoting awareness of fossil fuels. In 2001 I was the coordinator for the Auckland City council ‘RAW’ youth art installation project on Waiheke.
More recently I was commissioned to create the Welcome Cloak public sculpture for Nelson City Council now hanging at Greenmeadows – Putangitangi. I was also was involved through the City and Youth Council with the permanent ‘Four Sculptors at Tahuna Beach’ project in 2009 using recycled timber.
I participated in 2 national sculpture symposiums in 2006 and 2008.
In 2007 I undertook three, month long residencies, at the Global Arts Village in New Delhi, the Rodriguez- Amat Foundation in northern Spain, and at the David and Julia White Artists Colony in Costa Rica, producing mostly works on paper.
