Narrated Memories: Artworks by ACC Alumni Laurie Frick, Heather Parrish, and Michael Villarreal
Narrated Memories features the work of three exceptional ACC alumni who reference the collecting and rebuilding of memories in their artwork. Each artist takes fragments of information from data sets, historical sources, or personal memory and assembles these ideas into new artistic forms. Through each artists’ work, this exhibition examines memory, not as a fleeting feeling, but as a small part of a larger story waiting to be retold.
By hunting for the beauty found within the nuances of data, Laurie Frick experiments with our information-centered world through her visual, hand-built patterns. Through unveiling lesser-known histories of displacement, Heather Parrish questions a rooted understanding of the past to gain insight into the impacts of urban design. Michael Villarreal’s meditative compositions reflect on his deep-seated bonds to his family home and the underlying intersections between environment, memory, and meaning-making.
The Art Galleries (TAG) at Austin Community College is proud to present this exhibition in conjunction with ACC’s 50th anniversary celebrations. For half a century, the college has served as an academic institution that provides accessible education, aiding the pursuit of higher education. Each of the artists included in the exhibition developed formative experiences at ACC before establishing themselves in their respective artistic practices and careers.
