“As an artist, I am captivated by the metaphors embedded in working with clay, specifically how closely it resembles the human body and mind. Clay is an incredible medium for exploring the process of identity formation–it has memory, recording every touch the artist makes. This gives it a reflective quality, too. As I worked on this piece I realized how I feel as I make my way in the world as a woman–constrained, yet emergent. Though the sculpture teeters slightly, balancing on its nimble foot, it still dances boldly, arms open wide. I wanted to capture this possible duality in the feminine experience.”
