This framed and matted 17" x 20.75" watercolor painting by Hubert John Williams depicts a stone bridge over a river. On the left side of the bridge is green foliage along the river's edge. In the distance, several rooftops and chimneys are visible. In the lower mid-section of the painting are two boats in the river with passengers. The painting is in a neutral palette of gray, browns, greens, and yellow tones.
Hubert John Williams was an English portrait, landscape and architectural painter, etcher and illustrator. He was born in Kent in 1905 and studied at the Royal Academy School, where he was awarded the Landseer scholarship in 1928. He also attended the St. Martins School of Art and the L.C.C. School. Williams exhibited between 1926 and 1939 at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Oil, the New English Art Club amongst others. He was a member of the Pastel Group and the Society of Graphic Artists. His collections can be found at the Imperial War Museum, Museum of London, Ferens Art Gallery, Hull, Southampton Art Gallery, Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne and Bath.
