Reader's Folly recalls the immersive experience of reading, directly referencing Paul Auster's classic novel, The Brooklyn Follies, and reinterpreting it as an urban script. Referencing urban neighbourhoods, Reader's Folly reiterates a sense of community by grounding human experiences within the context of time and place, and locating them among the familiar buildings, roads and footpaths, and landmarks of our communities. While key phrases draw attention to their literary origins, they are embedded within a visual text that subsumes them so obliquely, that they submit to the reader's (or viewer's) folly of perception.
NOTE: This painting is beautifully framed in black oak.
