Created on a repurposed serving tray, Able gives new life to an unexpected object while celebrating the quiet elegance of the blue heron.
Layers of blue, white, silver, and iridescent glass beads are carefully placed to shape the bird’s sweeping feathers, long neck, and distinctive profile. The directional placement of the elongated beads creates movement through the plumage, while the shimmering neutral background allows the deep blues and brilliant yellow beak to stand forward.
The original rim of the serving tray becomes an integral part of the composition, its alternating blue, aqua, green, and pearlescent tiles forming a decorative border around the circular artwork. Rather than hiding the piece’s original purpose, the tray is incorporated into the design, adding another layer to its story and making the work completely one of a kind.
At 18 inches in diameter, Able combines bead mosaic, found object, and repurposed design in a piece that feels both contemporary and timeless.
