Spencer Finch utilizes various mediums to explore how to represent a subjective experience. Often using light and its color as a tool, Finch tries to bring moments of the past into the present experience and show us how representational practices are unable to fully and accurately capture moments lost to history. In the photograph Two Petals Fall (After Masaoka Shiki), we are experiencing the passage of time through the shrinking of a peony from Finch’s garden. Though vibrant in color, the peony is wilted and losing petals, bringing focus to the ephemeral life of the flower.

Through various media Spencer Finch, a constant traveler and scholar of history, confronts the difficulties of “truly” representing a subjective experience. What does a photograph leave out? Can words on a page really do it? In many of his works the burden of memory often placed on photographs and language is transferred onto a less-considered and more interactive medium: light.
