From 1994 to 2003, Ordo Amoris Cabinet (artist duo Francis Acea and Diango Hernandez) would analyze and infuse philosophical meaning into unremarkable, ordinary objects. The print "Smily" does much of the same, taking the iconic yellow and black smiley face and placing a small version in the middle of a blank print. Today, the smiley face has evolved from a simple ideogram into a highly utilized object of communication. This particular image was created by the artists on a computer, translated to film and shot to a photo polymer relief plate.

Ordo Amoris Cabinet

Cuban

Living and working in Havana, Cuba, Francis Acea and Diango Hernandez formed Ordo Amoris Cabinet in 1994. Acea was born in Havana, Cuba in 1967 and Hernandez was born in Sancti-Spiritus, Cuba in 1970. Attending the Havana Superior Institute of Design, Acea and Hernandez received their degrees in graphic and industrial design respectively and formed an artistic collaboration under the appellation of Ordo Amoris Cabinet, the Latin terms for “order” and “love.” The Ordo Amoris Cabinet collaboration lasted from 1994 to 2003.
