Wu Tsang's 2016 Artpace project centered around two historical figures: legendary Chinese feminist revolutionary, writer, and martial artist, Qiu Jin, and Wu Zhiying, her intimate friend and a calligrapher.
Through their relationship, Tsang explored queer identities in "a very open way, pushing past language or identity categories and thinking about how desire really functions between people and their relationships with each other."
Here, in "Self-Inscription," we see a portrait of the artist, Wu Tsang, and collaborator, Boychild, dressed as Qiu Jin and Wu Zhiying.
