Shahzia Sikander challenges strict formal tropes that are present across cultures, particularly by deconstructing orientalist narratives in Western art history. Working across mediums, Sikander is widely celebrated for subverting Central and South Asian miniature painting traditions, launching the form known today as neo-miniature. In the Monsters to Midget series, Sikander takes traditional narratives of Hindu and Muslim miniatures to create new mythological characters. In her own words, the series “was an indirect arrival to the human form. I was subverting the ‘dead’ ‘decorative’ arts in books on Islamic art by infusing their form and ‘flattened’ physicality with a perceived lurking vitality.”
