Lordy Rodriguez’s “The America Series” became a map of America based on Rodriguez’s own history, interaction, and memory of this country and culture. There are features of the map that are reminiscent of an original map of the United States, such as a region like the Great Lakes region, an East and West coast, and “some sort of Canada to the North and Mexico to the South.” The artist added an extra 5 states as an homage to the car, referencing the map he originally appropriated that had a national speed limit of 55. “The last drawing in this series is the America Key Map seen above. As I was drawing this piece, nostalgia was brimming, conjuring past memories of what I was thinking about at the time, or what I was listening to, or who I had a crush on. So I chose a color scheme based on an old wooden map puzzle I had as a kid that had these same 5 colors.” – Lordy Rodriguez
