After Mazatlan is a series of color photogravures made in collaboration with Hare and Hound Press during Julien’s recent residency at Artpace in 1999. The prints are derived from the same visual sources as, "The Long Road to Mazatlán," a video collaboration between Julien and the choreographer Javier de Frutos. Shot in and around San Antonio, the film mixes familiar images of the West—the cowboy, the cattle yard, the dirt road—with a more contemporary and homoerotic iconography, unsettling each one. A tale of frustration and loss, the work offers no prescription for stable identity or for the satisfaction of desire, but the sensuality of its images and form is hearteningly seductive. Both the film and the prints are visually rich, utilize saturated colors, and explore the American west and the iconography associated with cowboy culture in it’s western perception, in particular in gay culture of recent decades.
