Sakaida Kakiemon XIII assumed the family title on the death of his father, Sakaida Kakiemon XII, in 1963. In 1924, the XIII Kakiemon master graduated from the ceramics department of the Arita Industrial School. From this point he began working with his father, and in 1953 the father and son succeeded in recreating the classical Kakiemon technique for producing a nigoshide milky-white porcelain body. After the death of his father, Kakiemon XIII began exhibiting at the Nihon Dento Kogeiten (Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition). In 1971 he established and became president of the Association for the Protection of Kakiemon Ceramics, and when the technique for producing the nigoshide body was declared an Important National Cultural Treasure, Kakiemon XIII was named its protector. The following year he was awarded the Imperial Commendation of the Purple Cordon. In contrast to his father, whose conservative sensibility was drawn to conservative designs, Kakiemon XIII sketched preparatory drawings from direct observation and produced a new Kakiemon ware infused with a fresh, modern quality.
Works made by the head of the family are not marked, but are painted on a pure milky-white background and the box is marked Nigoshide/濁手. If the piece is not milky-white and the box is marked Nishikide/錦手 then it is a kiln piece made by apprentices.
