Rachel Kice’s current and ongoing series explores the human urge to keep. Canvases are placed directly on the forest floor and worked with pastel in response to the felt shapes and textures beneath them; some are then buried or left outdoors for months, allowing nature and time to alter the surface. In the studio, a multi-step process preserves the natural materials and artist-made marks, while other paintings are developed further, using the resulting forms as the foundation for more expansive compositions.
