Salvation Installation, series of 12 unframed monotype collages
- Gail Shaw-Clemons
This installation is a collection of images from the “Stick a fork in me, I’m done” series. This is a phrase I found myself repeating through my frustrations of 2020. It describes that pivotal point when you can’t tolerate anymore, disappointments and you have to make drastic changes to hold on to your sanity. I had to reframe from the news and political conversation, while finding refuge in my work. During this process I developed a new way of processing and synthesizing information as a survival technique.
Although, at times a sense of powerlessness continues to overcome me, however when I look into my grandchildren’s eyes, I see the hope and dreams that they and future generations deserve. Therefore, I know that I can never give up. Color has been a healing and rejuvenating process that allowed me to take back my power and re-create new visions and justices through my art.
We as a planet have serious issues with global warning, the poisoning of our natural resources, greed and the continuance of genocide in all its varied forms. These are all real realities that need to be dealt with for survival of the human race. We only have to go to the Natural History Museum to understand that we too can become extinct.
Stick a fork in me I’m done:
1. with tolerating ignorance and arrogance
2. with trying to understand hate
3. with the haves not giving a damn about the have nots
4. with segregation under the auspices of neighborhood schools.
5. with taking care of the planet when the powers that be, could care less. 6. with trying to appeal to one’s humanity when I’m not viewed as human 7. with people who boast about their success, when it has been handed
to them on a silver platter.
8. with people who boast about their only black friend
9. with bosses who give you everything, to do, yet never give
you the credit you deserve
10. with people who only want to know HIS-STORY, but not yours or mine 11. with men telling me what to do with my body, Hello! Slavery is over
last time I checked.
12. with culture vultures
13. with trying to fit in
14. with trying to be normal
15. with paying for war all over the world
16. with the fact that homelessness exists
17. with people not being able to make a living wage
18. with the alt-right
19. with the Ku Klux Klan
20. with fear
21. with guns being more important than our children and our lives 22. with planned ghettos, redlining, and discriminatory practices 23. with financial and food deserts in our neighborhoods
24. with alternative facts, (oops lies)
25. And the list continues............................................................................
