Mom's Shorthand Installation, series of 12 framed monotype collages
- Gail Shaw-Clemons
Mom’s Shorthand Installation is a tribute to my mom’s career as a clerk typist for the IRS. The mystery of this forgotten language fueled my continued fascination with language, written and spoken. Shorthand is a fluid movement of dancing forms, that took me on a journey, making it time to play.
These forms were a flash back to my mom’s knowledge and use of shorthand. She took dictations and typed documents, for a living, although never really being compensated for her skills and knowledge. I remember when I was in the fifth grade, my mom was a grade 5 in the government. After working there her whole career she retired, still a grade five. This is after training many people to surpass her with super careers. She never made more than $20,000. a year, yet managed to send three-girls to collage. She exposed us to ice skating, roller skating, skiing, tennis, pickleball, and all the things she loved. She loved life and us so much, that she never put limits on our dreams and aspirations.
Obviously, she was also a financial genius!
